Quilted nylon cushion, dyed with bamboo and soga, machined pieced, designed and made by Yoshiko Jinzenji, Bali, 2002
Recent Acquisitions 1992 - 2002: A Decade of Collecting Textiles (01/01/2003-31/12/2003)
The cushion reflects Jinzenji's concern with the lost of traditional skills and individuality through increasing industrial production of high quality goods.
The fabric is nylon dyed with bamboo and soga, a tropical plant native to Indonesia. In choosing to combine innovative contemporary synthetics with hand-weaving and natural dyes, Jinzenji has set a new aesthetic standard as a quiltmaker. She lives in Kyoto but since 1989 has had a studio in Bali. Here she takes inspiration from the natural world, experimenting with the local plants, roots and trees to create subtle and rich natural dyes.
