This contemporary scroll painting depicts the earthquake that struck Gujarat on 26 January 2001.
This scroll painting was purchased by Dr Deborah Swallow on Sunday 4 March 2001 at a craft stall organised by Mrs Ruby Palchoudhuri (Crafts Council of West Bengal) for the Adda, a public discussion organised in front of New Market Kolkata.
Scroll painting, paint on paper, seven frames depicting the artist's contemporary interpretation of the Gujarat earthquake in January 2001. A scrolling border with yellow flowers and green leaves highlights each image, predominantly depicting animals' and humans' suffering, in bold black strokes. This contemporary scroll painting is somewhat similar in style to Kalighat paintings produced during the 19th century.
