Photograph, black and white, from the series 'Signs of a Struggle', by Clare Strand, Brighton, 2003

Inspired by utilitarian photographs that are used as evidence, such as scientific and crime scene photography, Strand says her work is 'about the nature of the medium of photography, its uses and its limitations'. The mysterious images in this series, apparently discovered in some unspecified archive, contain labels and markings that seem intended to clarify what is shown. In fact, these traces of an obscure system of classification or interpretation only enhance their ambiguity. [11/08/2011-27/11/2011]
A black and white photograph of a parked car at night. One of the front doors is open, the front seat is covered with foil and there are large dark stains on the ground in front of the car. The print is mounted onto a slightly yellowed cardboard.
